Types of Early Years Services

When and if the time comes to handing your child over to a stranger, you need to be fully informed of the different types of childcare services. This can be a daunting task for any parent and the type of childcare that you need will depend on your needs, your child’s needs and the type of childcare that you prefer. There are a number of options when it comes to childcare. Services can be Community or privately run, centre based in a childcare facility or home based in your or the carers home.

There are two types of childcare services. They are community and private; the community services work within the Not-for-Profit sector while private is for profit and are usually self-employed.

Full day care services offer a structured day care service for children aged 0 – 6 for more than 5 hours per day and may include a sessional pre-school service. Services such as those currently described as day nurseries and crèches are included in this definition.

A sessional service usually refers to a pre-school that operates for no more than 3.5 hours a day.

School-Age Childcare caters for school-going children outside of normal school hours. It may include care before school, afterschool or both. It may also cater for children during school holidays. There is no notification or inspection system in place for school-age child care.
